TITLE:         COMPUTER OLYMPICS

GRADE LEVEL/SUBJECT:  The unit will expand students of all levels of
interest in Science, Social Studies and Language Arts.


 OVERVIEW:  Computer Olympics is a unit that was awarded by IBM Inc. and
"Classroom Computer Learning" magazine for excellence in computer
technology.  It is a unit designed to interact students with the subject
matter and the computer.  Drill and practice are stressed during the
activities to achieve the skill assisted by the computer.  Olympic athletes
are examples that use this procedure to accomplish their Gold, Silver, and
Bronze Medals.
     On going assessment procedures are acknowledged and displayed
throughout the lessons.  Sample Olympic Medals are awarded to the
individual student representing tasks completed.

PURPOSE:  Three programs correspond together in this unit to include
these content areas:  Facts, terms, writing skills and problem solving.
The Bank Street Writer Word Processor, Oklahoma View Career and MECC
Sell Lemonade, all follow the appropriate instructional formats.  These
techniques are:  Drill and practice, tutorial, simulation, games and
problem solving.
     The unit is divided into three branches.  They are Meet the Bank Street
Writer, Creative Writing, Careers/Economics.  The instructor has the
discretion of developing his or her own time-line to complete each
section.

RESOURCES/MATERIALS NEEDED:  Computer Programs---Bank Street
Writer, Okahoma View, MECC Sell Lemonade, and several computers.


OBJECTIVES:  MEET THE BANK STREET WRITER
1. The students through drill and practice will be required to identify the
computer keyboard.  
2. Terms to define:  retrieve, file, save, transfer menu, password, and
write mode. 
3. Understand and use the three modes:  write, edit and transfer.

ACTIVITIES AND PROCEDURES:   The students task is to practice learning
the computer keyboard.  They will work in pairs assisting each other.  The
teacher will serve as a guide to direct the student through the modes.
Time will be allowed for the partners to use the tutorial program.
Evaluations will be concluded when the individual is ready.  Medals will be
awarded.  Students achieving the Olympic Medals have earned the
understanding of the program.  This unique software can assist them in
all subject areas.
  

OBJECTIVES:   CREATIVE WRITING
1. Research reference materials 
2. Write research report or story 
3. Print a hardcopy.
  
ACTIVITIES AND PROCEDURES:  The students will be assigned a research
project pertaining to science subjects.  The report will be written in
Language Arts class and read during science classtime.  Language skills,
reference skills, research skills and writing skills will be included to
prepare individuals for written projects.  Students will sign a contract to
follow certain steps to achieve a grade for a goal.  The project will be
entered into the computer.  Medals will be awarded when contracts have
been fulfilled.
     The Bank Street Writer can also be used when students are writing
information in Social Studies when studying Careers.
   

OBJECTIVES:   CAREERS
1. Students will answer career search worksheet. 
2. Enter findings in computer for a printout. 
3. Define advertising terms: expenses, profit, and assets. 
4. "Sell Lemonade" program will reinforce the terms profit and loss. 
5. Students will write report over the career using the word processor.

ACTIVITIES AND PROCEDURES:   The Oklahoma View is a program allowing
students to preview a career search.  It has a worksheet questionaire that
will print a list of individual career possibilities.  
     The students using the Sell Lemonade simulation make decisions that
allow them to determine the relationship between production and pricing
in business advertising.  Printing a report about Careers will earn the
students a Medal.

TYING IT ALL TOGETHER:  The Computer Olympics unit will challenge and
expand students of all levels of interest.  The awards posted can develop a
desire for a goal within all individuals.  The inner will to succeed through
the use of a computer can develop the enthusiasm for learning.
