TITLE: "THE ANSWER IS----WHAT IS THE QUESTION?
             or Directions for QUIZ-BOWL

AUTHOR:  Julie York, Lincoln Savage Middle School;
         Grants Pass, OR

GRADE LEVEL: Appropriate for grades 4-8

OVERVIEW: The Quiz Bowl Game is a generic tool that
can be adapted to any subject area although the example
here is in the social studies area.

ACTIVITIES AND PROCEDURES:

QUIZMASTER: Teacher

SCOREKEEPER: The student or teacher who lists teams on
chalkboard and keeps track of team points.

PLAYERS: Students, divided into 2, 3, or 4 teams

GAME DESCRIPTION: There are six categories,
corresponding to individual units of study. The "Grab
Bag" category may represent questions taken from any
unit of study. Each number (1-6) below a category
represents one answer to a question for the player.
The answers to questions are matched with points and
become more difficult as the points increase. The
50-point "Super-Bowl" answers are the most difficult of
all and may be omitted if too hard.

SUGGESTED RULES: The object of these rules is to allow
you to involve the maximum number of students.
a. Teams take turns in order. Team members also take
     turns within each team.
b. Each player in turn selects a category--and a
number. The teacher gives the appropriate answer.
The player is to think up a logical question to
fit the answer. If the player responds correctly,
the team gains the matching number of points. If
the player does not respond correctly, the next
team tries the answer. The question process
stops with the second team--whether it is found
correct or not. The next team to play chooses a
     new category.
c. The game proceeds until all answers on the board
have been addressed or until a time limit is
     reached.
d. The team with the highest points wins.

VARIATIONS:
a. Team "captain" may be allowed to choose category
     each time.
b. Team members may consult on response for 30
     seconds.
c. Teams may continue with responses until one is
missed; then the next team begins their turn.
d. When a team fails to respond correctly, points may
be removed from that team's score.
