TITLE: MULTICULTURAL BINGO
       (or any other subject)

AUTHOR:  Sandy Bahan, Norman Central Mid-High;
         Norman, OK

GRADE LEVEL: 7th to Adult

OVERVIEW: __________ Bingo is a "get-acquainted"
activity that works well for first day/first session
situations, and for assessing knowledge/awareness level
of participants/students.

PURPOSE: This activity is useful in assessing the
informational and awareness levels of participants in a
non-threatening atmosphere.

OBJECTIVES: This activity has a three-fold objective -
to get acquainted, to assess knowledge base, and to
encourage participation.

ACTIVITIES AND PROCEDURES:
Prepare a list of 24 items that involve knowledge,
ability, and experiences that should be common to some
one of the members of the group -

Example: - multiculturual -
I can name 10 tribes indigenous to North America
I know what feliz navidad means
I know on what continent the Egyptian pyramids are
     found
I know what the acronym NAACP stands for
I have visited another country
I am bilingual
I know how to use chopsticks
I can name dances from five different countries
I have a hand-made quilt, quilted by someone I know,
     etc.

Arrange these items in a 25-square grid, one item per
grid, with the center grid reading "YOUR NAME".

Ask the student/participant to write their name in the
center grid.

Instruct the students to, at the signal, begin
circulating through the room seeking out those who can
sign a grid indicating that they can do/have done/know
that item. No person may sign more than one grid per
sheet. It is quite likely that several people can sign
more that one grid, but they should then decide if they
want to sign different grids on other sheets. NO ONE
MAY SIGN MORE THAN ONE GRID PER SHEET. The intent is
to talk with/meet as many people as possible. Allow
ten minutes for this activity.

TYING IT TOGETHER: When the group has been called back
together, determine who has the most signatures and
reward their effort. The rest of the period can be
spent going through each grid, asking the person who
signed the grid to perform/discuss/explain whatever
that activity is. Reward each person who can
successfully complete their activity. This is also an
opportunity for expansion activities to complement the
items in the grid.
