TITLE: THE WALKER SOCIAL SKILLS CURRICULUM
AUTHOR: Bill Zook: Pine Hills School;
Miles City, MT.
GRADE LEVEL: Appropriate for grades 5+
OVERVIEW: To equip students for co-existence and
societal function from the viewpoint that delinquent
youth are disadvantaged, if not even handicapped. Due
to the limited exposure time to these students, this
program appears well structured such that the time
needed can be adapted to nearly any student. It is
presumed that social competence is a requisite in
adjustment and transition processes.
OBJECTIVES:
1. Improve social competence of delinquent youth
within peer-, adult-, and self-related domains.
2. Preparing such students for the behavioral demands
and expectations of social agents within all
environs, now and later.
3. Teaching skills involved in developing social
support networks and friendships.
4. Teaching ways to analyze social situations and
adjusting to them.
ACTIVITIES AND PROCEDURES:
Using the Walker ACCESS Program:
1. Screen for competence and eventual placement in
program.
2. Review previously learned skill(s).
3. Instruct new skill.
4. Illustrate negative skill example
(non-example).
5. Identification of critical skill features.
6. Central message.
7. Discrimination practice.
8. Situational role play.
9. Application discussion.
10. Student contract.
TYING IT ALL TOGETHER:
Behavioral Management:
The report is that the ACCESS program is
intrinsically motivating. It is the teachers' skill
that can encourage this interest. Much emphasis is
placed on the opportunities for teachers' praise of
students.
