TITLE: Astronomy: A Star Party AUTHOR: Mike Harris GRADE LEVEL: 9-12 Astronomy OBJECTIVES: 1. After classroom demonstrations of the telescope, students will understand the functions of a telescope. 2. Students will learn the daylight uses of a telescope. 3. Students will be able to name the parts of the telescope. 4. After previously learning the planets and constellations, the students will be able to identify and view them during a star party. 5. Parents will have a better understanding of what is being taught by attending the star parties. RESOURCES/MATERIALS: Professional slides Constellation slides made with a 50mm camera. Textbook Seasonal star charts Binoculars 8 Inch Celestron Telescope PREVIOUS RELATED MATERIAL: The students have been introduced to astronomy by teacher lecture and slides to increase their curiosity of the skies. SUPPLEMENTARY MATERIALS: Guest speaker from the local astronomy club. Amateur astronomers with various telescopes. TYING IT ALL TOGETHER: The students will have a written test along with being assigned an individual constellation to be presented at the star party.
