TITLE:  POWER IN THE TUBES

GRADE LEVEL/SUBJECT:   8th grade Physical Science

OVERVIEW:  Work and power are some times difficult topics to put together
of eighth graders.

PURPOSE:  To Investigate the relationship between force, distance, and
time. Calculate the work and power for the students trials.

OBJECTIVES: As a result of this activity, the students will:
  1) compute the work done by lifting a known weight through some distance.
  2) Graph the time vs different tubes sizes. 
  3) Find the relationship between work and power.

RESOURCES/MATERIALS:  Several paper tubes, one meter of string, stop
watch, weights, and graph paper.

ACTIVITIES AND PROCEDURES:
  1) The activity involves rolling a weighted string up on a paper tube,
cardboard tube, or wood dowel.
  2) Each time the string is rolled up, a certain amount of work is done.
  3) As the string is rolled up the time required is measured.
  4) The student will graph the times measured vs tube	size.
  5) The student will the look for relationships between work and power.

TYING IT ALL TOGETHER:  With these activities the students can easily see
the relationships for work and power.
