TITLE: The History of Flight Timeline

AUTHOR: Cynthia Giroux, Carminati School,
          Tempe, Arizona

GRADE LEVEL: Appropriate for 3-6

OVERVIEW: A timeline of pictures and short summaries that
chronicles the events in the history of flight that let to
the first manned flight and beyond.

OBJECTIVE(s): Students will be able to:
List events that took place in the development of manned
flight and space exploration in chronological order.
To report on one event in detail.

RESOURCES/MATERIALS:
NASA publications (free from your regional NASA Research
Center) Biographies of pilots and astronauts, rocket
scientists, etc., encyclopedias, books on flying machines,
anything that's available. (Civil Air Patrol representative
from local unit could come and speak.)

ACTIVITIES AND PROCEDURES: Students brainstorm with KWL
Chart as they prepare to research what they want to learn
about events in the history of flight. (May need to help
them get started with suggestions, e.g. kites, Chinese,
daVinci, etc.) Students may work in teams, pairs, or
individually to research their portion of the timeline.

TYING IT ALL TOGETHER: As the Timeline is constructed
(teacher makes baseline and assists students in ordering
events chronologically) students present their events with
written report accompanied by illustration that will be
fastened to wall sized line for the display in the
classroom. Students learn about the significant events in
the process as well as knowing a particular event well from
the research done and report given.

ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES: A class book could be made with
duplicates of the reports and more illustrations. It could
be organized into chapters of Flying Machines, Scientists,
and People Who Fly.
