TITLE: SPUD STUFF

GRADE LEVEL: Appropriate for Primary Grades
OVERVIEW and PURPOSE: The study of potatoes was
concluded with the following activity that reviewed
concepts previously studied. This hands on activity
resulted in a take home booklet to remember our potato
unit.
OBJECTIVES: Students will be able to demonstrate a
variety of conceptual understandings. The student
will:
1. Draw a picture of their spud.
2. Give their spud a name.
3. Measure their spud in inches.
4. Count their spud's eyes.
5. Compare spuds with other children to see who had
the most and least eyes.
6. Weigh their spuds and compare their spud with
others.
7. Estimate the size of their spud on graph paper.
8. Compare their spud's actual size to their estimate.
MATERIALS NEEDED:
potatoes
knife
booklets (made ahead of time)
rulers
paper strips to measure
scales
paint
ACTIVITIES AND PROCEDURES:
Prepare booklets in advance (1/2 sheet size)
Design and decorate per choice. ( ) represents my
suggestion.

(On this page, potatoes were cut in half and using
tempera paint, the children made a potato print with
their own spud.)
TYING IT ALL TOGETHER:
There are so many activities that could be incorporated
into this project. We used this project during center
time. The booklets and potatoes were distributed to
the entire class to review and do page one together.
We then were in small groups of five to six students.
Approximate time for whole group activity was 15
minutes. Approximate time of small group activity was
30 minutes.
