TITLE:  MAKING PERSONAL MAPS

AUTHOR:  Esther Fair, McKinley Middle School;
         Coffeyville KS

OVERVIEW;  When using maps,many students have difficulty
relating to distances. This activity gives them a map to
relate to.

GRADE LEVEL:   5/6 grade Social studies

PURPOSE:   The purpose of this activity is to better
acquaint students with maps.


OBJECTIVE(s): students will be able to
1.  Make a map of a specific area
2.  Provide a readable legend
3.  Make a map that could be used
4.  Relate better to maps in general.

MATERIALS:  construction paper, rulers

ACTIVITIES AND PROCEDURES:
1.   Each student will determine the distance from home to
     school
2.   Using large construction paper 18/24 or larger plot
     home and school and area between.
3.   Make a scale to go with map.
4.   Make a legend to explain map.

TYING IT ALL TOGETHER:
Students enjoy using a copy of another`s map to see if they
can get from school to a friend`s house.

The students seem to be more comfortable with reading maps
after this exercise.
