TITLE: WE LIVE IN AN INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY

GRADE LEVEL/SUBJECT: World Geography 9th grade
OVERVIEW: Many students don't realize how small the World has
become in regards to the exchange of many material goods. Most
teens are very concerned with clothes and this is a great way
to incorporate geography with something that is of interest to them.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this activity is to show that students
are daily involved in the world of international trade and the
world economic picture.
OBJECTIVES:
1. Once they have finished this activity they will be aware
that we live in an international community.
2. They will be able to identify some of the countries they
found clothing items from.
3. They will discover that World Geography is not just a study
of places on a map, but that there are people who interact indirectly
with them.
RESOURCES/MATERIALS:
1. Students will use their own clothes and shoes.
2. Each student will need a blank world map with political
boundaries drawn in.
3. World atlas or a text with maps.
4. Colored pencils.
ACTIVITIES AND PROCEDURES:
1. Have the students read the labels in their clothing and write
down where they were made (include shoes). Once they have made
their list give students a blank world map and have them locate the
country, label it, and color it on the map. (They should have
several different countries on their maps.)
2. Tell them to go home and look through their clothing and shoes
and make an other list of all the different countries they find.
The next day have them add them to their map.
TYING IT ALL TOGETHER: Have students count the number of
different countries they have labeled and colored on their
maps. See which student has found the most countries. Students
should be able to see right away that they are an important part
of the international world community. This activity can also be
used with economics or trade patterns or in a variety of ways.
