TITLE: Timeline

AUTHOR: Lucinda Kelly Liedman, Our Lady of Mount Carmel, AZ

GRADE LEVEL/SUBJECT: 5-8; social studies, history,
geography

OVERVIEW: It is difficult for the adolescent to appreciate
the importance of studying the past; in order to help make
timelines interesting it helps to personalize the technique.

PURPOSE: To clarify the meaning of the Timeline and the
concept of B.C. numeration.

OBJECTIVES:
  1. To clarify the concept of the Timeline.
  2. To increase the teacher's knowledge of student's
      personal lives.
  3. To reinforce the concept of selection of data in
      historical reporting.

RESOURCES/MATERIALS: 3 ft. lengths of white paper (four
sheets of typing paper taped together), pencils (lead and
colored), ruler

ACTIVITIES AND PROCEDURES:
1. Have students draw a horizontal line on a 3 1/2 ft.
roll of paper 2" up from the bottom edge. Beginning
12" in from the left margin mark as BIRTHDATE. Mark
the line at equal intervals: 1 1/2" equals one year.
2. Students place above the line major personal events
that have made up their history beginning with birth.
They place above their personal history any major world
     events that have occurred.
3. Then to understand B.C. or B.T. (before them) have the
students mark in the date of parent's marriage and any
other major events in their families that occurred
     before their births.
