Who are the Christa McAuliffe Fellows?

The Christa McAuliffe Fellows are front-line teachers who teach gladly and who are innovators and mentors. They are successful competitors for the Christa McAuliffe Fellowship Program, established by the United States Congress in 1986. The program is unusual in that the grants are given directly to individual teachers, rather than to a school or organization. The awards are given so that teachers can carry out projects, undertake advanced study to enhance their own knowledge and skills, and design courses and materials to improve their students' educational experiences. While teachers must have the support of peers and administrators, emphasis is placed on teacher initiative, expertise, and dedication to improving the quality of educational experiences for school children.

Nationally, approximately 60-75 Fellows are chosen each year. Since the beginning of the program in 1986 through 1995, a over 600 teachers have been selected from the 50 states, District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, Virgin Islands, Northern Mariana Islands, Palau, and American Samoa. In 1992, the McAuliffe Fellowship Program was reauthorized by Congress with some changes in administration so that some states found it necessary to delay their Fellow selections for 1993 and 1994. All 1993 and 1994 Fellows have been invited to attend the Fourth Annual Conference at the McAuliffe Center at Framingham State College July 26-29, 1995 and many will teach at the First Christa McAuliffe Institute.
