Using the TeleElection '96 Links
The list below contains many links to information about the 1996 elections.
We have made every effort to provide links to a variety of viewpoints,
candidates,
parties, and media. OFCN, its trustees and staff, and the authors of
this page do not necessarily endorse, support, or advocate any of the
organizations,
parties, candidates or viewpoints linked to this page.
Students and teachers should use this resource to learn not just about politics
but also about media literacy. When you visit a new site, find out who
makes or sponsors the site, and look for signs of their biases and beliefs
in the content they post there... and the content they leave out. Look for
clues to the credibility of site authors: Do they supply evidence for their
views? Do they supply links to their evidence? Are their arguments logical?
Do they use correct grammar and spelling? If you're interested in an issue,
don't just look at what one party has to say about it -- check what their
rivals think about it, see what you can learn from different media and political
organizations, and form your own judgments on the issue based on what you
learn.
The total content on the many websites linked to here is massive, and any
of these sites can be changed by the website owners at any time, without
warning. Like anyone who posts a list of links to other sites on the worldwide
web, OFCN is unable to control or even know with certainty what appears
on any page to which this page is linked. Many political sites address
controversial
topics that may upset some students, parents, teachers, administrators,
or school boards. These topics include abortion, gay rights, gun control,
race and religion. Teachers who have cause to be concerned about students
being exposed to particular topics or viewpoints should pre-screen sites
before allowing students to use them. Don't forget that the sites can change
from one day to the next! HTML-savvy teachers may copy this list and customize
it for use by their students. If you have reason to worry about these issues
and neither screening nor customization is feasible for you, perhaps you
should reconsider using the Internet in the classroom. Proceed with caution!
OFCN can not and does not promise that the websites linked to from this
page are free of words or images that are offensive, age-inappropriate,
vulgar, biased, designed to sell you stuff, or otherwise objectionable to
you or anyone else. This includes the section labelled "Especially
for Students." Use this list at your own risk, don't say we didn't
warn you, please don't sue us, and have a nice a day.
With those caveats in mind, have fun. Tell us if you like this site and
let us know of any sites you think we simply must add to this list. Our
e-mail address is at the bottom of the page. Thanks!
