Description of your school:
Urbana Middle School is a public school in Illinois, the fourth largest
middle school in the state. We have 1100 students in grades 6, 7, and 8.
We begin the school day at 8:45 and end the day at 3:35 with students
attending 8 classes. The core subjects that each student takes include
math, English, reading, science, history or geography. Physical education
and health are required. Encore choice courses that can be chosen include
art, German, Spanish, French, consumer science, band, chorus, orchestra,
industrial technology, resource. Class sizes range from 14 in some special
classes, 24-26 in core classes, 28-32 in encore classes, and much larger in
music.
Description of your community:
Our community of Urbana is the home site of the University of Illinois
at Urbana-Champaign. We are a city of 38,000 in east central Illinois.
Much farmland surrounds our city. The main manufacturing is Kraft/Humko
(Kraft Foods), Flex'Gate (makes bumpers), Gill Track & Field, and Motorola.
Description of sports done in your school:
Our school supports competition in basketball for both boys and girls,
volleyball for girls, and track and field for both sexes. Football,
soccer, baseball, and wrestling are sponsored by community agencies.
