Description of your school:
Public school of 1175 students in 6th through 8th grade. Class begins
at 8:45 am and is dismissed at 3:35 pm. Our class sizes range from 22-32.
Music and physical education can and usually have more. We will compete
on an all weather track for the running events, on grass for the throwing
events, and on a gym floor for the standing long jump. The subjects taught
include required courses of English, social studies (history or geography),
math, science, reading, health, and physical education. Electives are
French, Spanish, German, band, chorus, orchestra, art, and consumer and
family living.
Description of your community:
Our community of Urbana is the location of the University of Illinois.
We are a town of 32,000. Because of the university we have access to
many cultural events and sporting events. We are surrounded by corn
and soybean fields. Farming is a vital industry but there are industries
such as Gill Track and Field (supplies to the Olympics), Flex 'n Gate
(maker of truck and car bumpers), and Carle Hospital and Clinic.
Description of sports done in your school:
We participate in basketball for boys and girls. The boys went to
sectionals. The 7th grade girls team was third in state. We have track
and field for both boys and girls. This season begins Monday. Volleyball
is just about to conclude now. It is only for girls. The 7th grade girls
are playing in the first game of the state tournament Saturday evening,
March 15th. Our mascot is the Tiger.Go Tigers!!
