Description of your school:
Prince Street Elementary School is part of the Wicomico County, State of Maryland Public school system. Our enrollment is approximately 485 students in grades PreK thru 5. We start our school day at 8:15 AM and conclude at 2:45. Each day our classes include a 90 minute reading and 90 minute math block with a 30 minute lunch break and a 20 minute recess. Our school year is 180 days long and planned on a 6 day cycle which includes 120 minutes per cycle of physical education, 40 minutes of art, 30 minutes of media and 60 minutes of music per cycle.
Currently we are in a very unique physical location, as our true school is being renovated. So our entire school population has been "relocated" to a portable trailer location since April '06. We anticipate we will be in this location until January '08. We will be using the fields available to us to compete which are simple grass and sand fields. We will create, as close as possible, whatever parameters needed.
Description of your community:
Our school services a small city which is populated with just under 24, 000 people. The ethnic backgrounds in the city are extremely diverse which is reflected in our demographics at Prince Street. Our ELL population is large and very active in many facets of our school life. We have a rich a varied history with many ties to the water and agriculture. We are located only 30 minutes from the Atlantic Ocean to our east and an hour to the west is the Chesapeake Bay. Perdue Chicken is based originated out of Salisbury. We have our own minor league baseball team, our local university fields many successful sport teams and we have team in a variety of leagues in all seasons.
Description of sports done in your school:
Our county wide curriculum is no longer "sports-based." It is now "skills-based." As one of the two physical education teachers here at Prince Street, Mrs. Tilghman ensures that all the basic skills are presented and then incorporated so that the students can see a sports relationship. Unfortunately, competition is not encouraged. Actually, it is almost discouraged. One method of exposing our students to sports is to play "lead-up" games with them. Although these are not the actual games, at least the students are being exposed to the teamwork involved with the games, using the skills involved with the sports and deriving some of the benefits. We cover the follow skills: balance; spatial awareness; locomotor skills; long & short-handled implements; striking; rhythmic response; fitness & ball control.
