the capital of Finland.
Espoo stands out for its open expanses and scenic natural beauty. On its
southern edge, the city has a 58-km shorelinealong the Gulf of Finland,
while forests and a scattering of lakes cover northern Espoo. In between
lies one of Finland's
most modern, dynamic and vital cities, or strictly speaking, five major
centres, since Espoo's business district is notconcentrated in a single
area.
Espoo is a vital part of the greater Helsinki region. Lakes and the Gulf of
=46inland account for more than 175 km2 of Espoo's total area of 486 km2.
Espoo includes 165 islands in the Gulf, and nearly 100 lakes or ponds
inland. The city isFinland's second largest. Of its 185,000 residents, 90%
are Finnish-speaking and 10% are Swedish-speaking. Nearly 1million people
live in the greater Helsinki area.
Espoo has a global reputation for its many children's and youth choirs,
which have made successful concert tours around the world. Tapiola's
striking new cultural centre offers a wide range of concerts, drama and
exhibitions. Many interesting events are organized in Espoo every year,
including the international April Jazz festival, musical festivals,
cinema, interactive art exhibits and the Espoo Carnival.
