Description of school:
We are a magnet school for academically
gifted students. We are a full-time school for 400 gifted
middle school children in the city of Virginia Beach. We are a
public school and all of our children are from the city of
Virginia Beach. We are on a 100 minute block schedule, which
means our students competing in this Olympics have PE every
other day. The PE classes avergae 30 - 35 students each. All of
our 6th grade students have to take Latin I as a required
course. This is the same Latin I that is taught at the high
school level, so our students are getting high school credits
in the 6th grade. All 7th grade students take Algebra I, and
all 8th grade students take Geometry. Latin II is also offered
for those who do extremely well in Latin I, and we are thinking
of offering Latin III next year. Spanish I, II, and III are
currently offered. These are all high school credit courses.
Our students will be competing on grass. We do not have a track.
Community:
Virginia Beach is the most populated city in
Virginia. With 450,000+ people, our school system serves over
75,000 students. We have a large military presence with Oceana
Nava Air Station, the only US base for the navy's f-14 fighter
jets. (This is the same airplane that was used in the movie Top
Gun.) This is also a very big tourist area with over 30 miles
of beachfront. Virginia Beach is part of the Hampton Roads
community that includes Norfolk, Suffolk, Chesapeake, Hampton,
and Newport News. This metropolitan area has over 1.5 million
people.
Description of sports:
rollerblading, STXball, soccer,
badminton, floor hockey, and of course the big 3--basketball,
football, and softball. Mind you, these are all sports that are
done in PE. Our school does not have any interscholastic sports.
