Description of your school: Sherwood is a public school in Highland Park,
IL. We are located about 20 miles north of Chicago. We are in school
from 8:35 to 3:15 each day. Our class sizes range from 15
to 26. We have about 250 students from Kindergarten to grade
5. We also have about 50 hearing-impaired children at our school,
who come to us from all over the northern suburbs. We learn
all the major subjects, like reading, writing, math, science,
social studies, physical education, art, and music. We also
do a lot of computer projects. We have about 80 computers
that are networked in our building and each computer has a
fast connection to the Internet.
We will be competing in the TeleOlympics on a grass field.
Description of your community: Highland Park is a suburb of Chicago,
located about 20 miles
north of the city. We have a population of about 30,000,
including Michael Jordan and a few other players on the Bulls.
Highland Park is located along the shores of Lake Michigan
and we have some nice beaches here. We also have Ravinia
Park, which is the summer home of the Chicago Symphony
Orchestra. All summer long there are classical, jazz, and
pop concerts at Ravinia. Highland Park is a nice place to
live, with many beautiful homes. There is a famous house
in Highland Park called the Willets House, which was
designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.
Description of sports done in your school: Every Sherwood student has physical education class at least
twice a week. Upper grades have 3 classes a week. We play
lots of different games, do fitness activities, and learn
about being healthy. Students also like to play football,
baseball, and basketball at recess time. Some play other
games like wallball or tetherball. Many students play
on baseball, soccer, and basketball teams after school (but
not at Sherwood). We also have ice skaters, rollerbladers,
and gymnasts. We love sports here!
