The Academy Special Event
holiday-exchange96

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Welcome to OFCN's second Academy Special Project: holiday-exchange96! OFCN's webpage will be posting holiday-related information, written by and for students. We have also established a listserv, so that those with only e-mail will be able to receive all the messages as they are posted to the website. You can find the holiday-exchange96 webpage at

To subscribe to the listserv, send a message to:

ABOUT THE PROJECT:
The holiday-exchange96 project will run in December and January. Here are some examples of the kind of information we would like students to contribute:

  1. Students all over the world have access to OFCN on the Internet. Tell those fellow students about your favorite holiday customs from your country, your culture, or your religious or ethnic group. Tell us about the differences and similarities between different countries, cultures and customs.

  2. All students know some adults, including parents, grandparents, other relatives, neighbors, family friends, teachers and other school employees. Ask these adults to share their favorite childhood memories of holidays. Try talking to some of the older adults you know to find out what their holidays were like before television! Tell us how the celebrations they remember have changed over time. Adults are welcome to post this information directly as well. We're particularly eager to hear from senior citizens, many of whom do not have access to computers. You may want to visit a senior citizen center as a class and interview some of its residents. Their memories will be archived on the Internet and preserved for future students to enjoy.

  3. If you or your class have found some interesting holiday- related websites, you can share it with your fellow students by sending the URL to special@ofcn.org!

HOW TO POST YOUR MESSAGES TO holiday-exchange96:

  1. Please fill out as many of the following details as appropriate:

    Name and date of holiday
Country or culture your posting represents
Type of celebration (religious, national, cultural)
Favorite customs and activities associated with that holiday
    Decorations associated with that holiday
What the holiday means to you
How you feel when you celebrate that holiday
Special foods associated with that holiday
Recipes you might want to share
Origin and history of the holiday

  2. Students, please include your name, age, school, city, state and country of posting. Adults, please include your name, age, city, state and country of posting, plus the year of your memory and how old you were at that time.

  3. Please indicate how you got your information. Did it come from your personal experience? Or did you get it by interviewing or exchanging e-mail with a parent or other adult?

  4. Please e-mail all the information to special@ofcn.org

SOME OF THE HOLIDAYS WE WOULD LIKE TO LEARN ABOUT:

For holiday-exchange96, please tell us about any of the many holidays that fall in December, January, and February. These include many holidays that are celebrated in homes, at school, and in houses of worship, some of which are listed below. Some may have religious significance, while others honor national heroes, kings, emperors or presidents. If you know of other holidays during this time period, please share those with us and we will add them to the project in the future.
