My right thumb is in a constant state of scaling and cracking open. This used to happen only in the winter months, so I thought it was just another manifestation of dry skin. This year, it continued throughout the summer. I would like to know what the problem may be (difficult, I know, without seeing it), what a typical course of treatment might be for such a problem and whether I can consult my family MD, or whether I should go to a dermatolotgist.

My bias is to see your/a dermatologist. In general, however, start with good unscented moisturizer (frequently)...the greasier the better...make sure you put it on after all handwashing...try to use mild soap to wash your hands...See a doc if not healed 1-2 weeks or sooner. Hope this helps.
