My dermatologist subscribed Retin-A for what he called flat warts on my face. But the contraindications scare me! Any concerns with Retin-A. He said it was usually used for acne, that my skin would get flakey eventually, applying twice daily sparingly.

Answer: Flat warts are caused by the same virus that causes many other types of warts, the human papilloma virus (different subtypes tend to cause differnt presentations in varous locations). Flat warts are a nuisance (as are most warts), but retin-A is a reasonable therapy that I also use with some success. If you are pregnant or about to get pregnant, then you should probably avoid retin-A from a medicolegal perspective. Otherwise, I think it is quite safe and the main drawback is if you get too irritated. I find that good counselling on its use is essential for good compliance and good results. If no results in 4-6 weeks then discuss other therapies with your dermatologist. Good luck. Eliot
