HI, I'm looking for some information on Acutane. I was prescribed Acutane starting Monday the 30th by my dermatologist for Not severe, but stubborn acne. I know about the health risks as far as pregnancy, but I son't know much else. He really didn't make me feel comfortable and I am looking for anyone who knows or has been on the drug. What about the reaction with ocd or alcohol. What about fertlity problems later on. I am 27 and am thinking of a family? What about the reactions with prescribed medications or even vigorous exercise. I feel so in the dark. Help!!
Thanks!!!!!

ANSWER: This is a great question! First, get a PDR (available in any library and READ the information). If you are a woman, I would have had you sign a consent form and received information from the company. If you call the company, they will send it to you instantly. If you like the derm you are going to, then go back immediately and get your questions answered. If you don't like them then make some phone calls....

The basic answer is that I use Accutane all the time. DO NOT GET PREGANANT. DO NOT GET PREGANT. TWO FORMS OF CONTRACEPTION are advised if you are sexually active and on Accutane. Your first dose should be at the time of your period and after a negative pregnancy test (that's how I prescribe it). DO NOT GET PREGNANT.

The question about childbearing later is good and my understanding of the data show that there is no increased risk of fetal malformations for children conceived greater than one month after the last dose of Accutane.

I tell my patients to wait three months.

GET INFORMED. DO NOT LET THIS MESSAGE SUFICE. GET INFORMED.
