Dr, Forgive my spelling of Tinnea Versicolor, but I have it in a bad way, and I have had it for many years. Selsen type shampoo does not work at all, could you recommend anything for me?
Regards...

ANSWER: Tinea versicolor is caused by the yeast (some people say fungus, but it's officially a yeast because of the way it grows in culture) currently named Mallasezia furfur (spelling might be slightly off). Some folks just seem more prone to get it. If that's really what it is (and not a true dermatophyte (fungus on the skin), then it can be treated with some different shampoos (such as ketoconazole) or oral medications (ketoconazole has been the best, but newer antifungal medications may be even more effective...no good studies, to my knowledge, yet.). Any dermatologist will be able to tell you what's going on and recommend treatments after seeing you and possibly scraping your skin.
