My 13-year old daughter has dry skin- on the face (cheeks, forehead, nose and chin) and dry skin all over. Is this unusual and will it change at puberty (she has not begun her menstrual cycle yet)? What would you recommend for a girl her age to use?
She is caucasian- medium to dark complected...

----------------------------

My guess is that her dry skin will become less of a problem as puberty sets in. You suggest that she has dry skin all over, but do not say whether this has been a lifelong problem, possibly associated with hayfever or asthma or whether there is a family history of these or similar skin problems (this would suggest a tendency toward dermatitis called atopy or atopic dermatitis).

If the problem is new, then it would be wise to consult with a dermatologist to consider potential environmental or internal factors that might be contributing to her problems. In the meantime, I would suggest fragrance free moisturizers that are listed as oil-free or non-comedogenic to avoid the added aggravation of worsening acne in pubertal years.

Hope this helps. Eliot
