What can you tell me about this disease and where do I get more information.
REPLY:
There are several excellent sources for information on Celiac Disease some of which are available on-line, by listserv, or my regular mail. These include:
via lynx or www: http://cpmcnet.columbia.edu/dept/gi/celiac.html This is an excellent summary prepared by Carol E. Semrad, M.D.
via listserv: send an e-mail to LISTSERV@SJUVM.STJOHNS.EDU In the body of this e-mail put SUB CELIAC followed by your first and last name. For example: SUB CELIAC John Doe
via regular mail: American Celiac Society - Dietary Support Coalition
58 Musano Court
I will send you a file on celiac disease which is simply too large to
reproduce in this setting.
Celiac disease is an interesting and complex disorder of the small
intestine in which genetically susceptible individuals through the
ingestion of wheat containing foodstuffs trigger an inflammation of
the intestinal lining which can result in weightloss and a variety of
nutritional deficiencies. The process is mediated through the immune
system. The treatment consists of following *forever* a *very* rigid
diet which eliminates the offending proteins and allows the intestine
to recover both in structure and function so that proper digestion
of nutrients can occur.
