My wife was recently diagnosed with Eagle's syndrome and was given a steroid injection. The pain has not subsided and the doctor indicates that surgery may be necessary. He, however, has not performed this type of surgery and after reading the anomymous letter on Eagle's Syndrome, I am a little leary of having this particular doctor perform it. I live in Charlotte, NC and am looking for some reputable sources who would be able to perform such surgery, successfully. Anywhere in the Southeast would be reasonable.

This type of surgery may be performed by either an otolaryngologist or an oral surgeon. Frankly, it is a relatively uncommon condition and therefore it is likely that you will have difficulty finding an appropriately trained individual with a large experience in this particular procedure. If you are unable to find someone locally with a significant experience in surgical treatment of Eagle's syndrome, I would suggest an otolaryngologist who has signigicant experience in head and neck surgery in general, or an oral surgeon with major surgery experience such as orthognathic surgery. It is important to note that surgery may be unsuccessful in eradicating pain from Eagle's syndrome.
I would recommend contacting your local state medical society who can refer you to the state otolaryngologic society, or perhaps a department of otolaryngology at the closest medical school for information about local expertise.
