I have had a sore throat, about 2 inches below my adam's apple, for about 3 weeks. I do not have any cold or flu symptoms, except for an occasional clogged left ear.
I am getting somewhat worried and think that it may be serious. My doctor believes it may be allergies. What should I be looking out for and how long should I wait before I seek further treatment?

There are a number of possible causes for a sore throat of this nature including infection, allergy, environmental irritants (cigarettes, other airborne irritants or pollutants, perfumes, etc.), acid reflux from the stomach, thyroid disease, as well as tumors, amongst other possibilities. A sore throat lasting for several weeks warrants a careful examination by a physician. If the cause of the sore throat is not clear to the primary care physician, or if initial attempts at treatment fail to resolve the symptoms, I would recommend an evaluation by an otolaryngologist who can perform a thorough inspection of the throat in his/her office.
