I experience annoying fluctuations in my hearing. I often feel as if there is fluid in my ears which interupts my hearing. At times it feels as if fluid is running down the back of my throat. Upon seeking help from my primary care doctor it was suggested that I take sudafed for a few weeks. This has not helped and I have no history of alergies or associated breathing problems. I can't say how long the problem has gone on, but it has been more than a few months. What would you suggest?

The symptoms described are consistent with a eustachian tube dysfunction or possibly actual fluid accumulation in the middle ear (serous otitis media). Such a symptom can occur with upper respiratory conditions including mild cold syndromes. A trial of over-the-counter medication such as sudafed is a reasonable initial treatment if it is not contraindicated. Eustachian tube dysfunction can last for several weeks once it occurs. If the symptoms fail to resolve after several weeks I would suggest an examination by an otolaryngologist. Other possible treatments that might be recommended include antibiotics, prescription decongestants, or topical nasal steroid sprays. Frequent attempts at gently "popping" the ears (autoinflation) can be helpful.
