I have had tonsilitis for two weeks now and have been off of antibiotics for one week. My doctor told me that I have viral tonsilitis, and it would take a few weeks to heal. My tonsils are still huge and painful and my fatigue is still persistent. Is there anything I can do?

Viral throat infections are typically 4-7 days in duration and frequently are milder in severity than sore throats caused by bacterial infections. Such infections are self-limited, usually require only analgesics such as tylenol or mouth lozenges, and are generally not helped by antibiotics

Infectious mononucleosis is a viral infection that typically causes significant enlargement of the tonsils as well as other lymph nodes in the neck, sore throat (occasionally severe), fever, malaise, and fatigue. Infectious mononucleosis can last for a few weeks and there is usually no benefit derived from antibiotics. Bedrest, analgesics, and hydration are the mainstays of treatment. The definitive diagnosis of infectious mononucleosis requires a blood test known as a "monospot".

Sore throats lasting more than a week, associated with obvious tonsil enlargement are suggestive of a bacterial infection. A culture of the throat may be helpful.

Antibiotics are the treatment of choice for bacterial infections of the tonsils. Such infections typically require 10 days of antibiotic treatment.
