It is important to know whether your sense of smell was normal before surgery and how long has it been since your surgery. The most common cause of diminished sense of smell is obstruction to airflow through the nose such as that which might be caused by a common cold or allergies. Chronically diminished sense of smell may be related to anatomical abnormalities such as a deviated septum, perennial allergies, nasal polyps, chronic sinus infection, or trauma (nasal, facial, or head trauma). In rare instances, tumors may cause loss of sense of smell. Occasionally individuals will lose their sense of smell for no apparent reason. It is postulated that certain mineral deficiencies may account for some cases of idiopathic loss of sense of smell (ie zinc). It is not uncommon to have an abnormal sense of smell following nasal or sinus surgery for a variable period of time following surgery because of swelling and accumulation of secretions.
