Dear Dr.
Do allergies cause lymph nodes to swell and remain swollen?

Reply: --------------------

It would be relatively unlikely that chronic lymph node enlargement would be an isolated symptom of allergy. However, chronic fluctuating lymph node enlargement is known to occur with allergy both as a result of the primary allergic process and as a result of secondary upper respiratory infections that frequently accompany allergic disorders. This represents inflammatory lymphadenopathy. I have previously posted a response to an inquiry regarding lymph node enlargement in which I outline some of the characteristics of lymph node enlargement that might indicate the need for a biopsy. Please refer to the "previous questions" section under "Lymph nodes".
