Hello Dr.,
My 13 year old son has had 11 bouts of strep in the last 18 months..he has
been subsequiently tested in between to make sure the infection is gone.
He is very hygenic as far as brushing and rinsing. My question is what step
should I do next? We are at wits end especially with no health
ionsurance...these visits are killing us!
Thanks.

Most otolaryngologists in the US will recommend that tonsillectomy be considered if a child has between 4-6 episodes of documented strep throat in one year or 8 episodes in 2 years. Therefore, based on what you have stated, your son would seem to meet even the most conservative criteria for considering tonsillectomy in the management for recurrent infection. I would suggest you consult with an otolaryngologist.
