My brother-in-law is being advised to have this surgery. He lives in Ames, Iowa. Family is concerned that the doctor he is seeing does not have enough experience in this surgery/area. He has had other nose area surgery 2 times in the last two years. He is in severe pain and has had to be admitted to the hospital for iv antibiotics and pain relief.

Any advise as to doctors in area? Mayo or Iowa City?

Also, the doctor is very agressive about this surgery as he had in the recent past another patient who he didn't push for surgery who is now in a vegative state due to infection induced brain damage. A lawsuit is ongoing.

Any help would be appreciated. Phoenix, AZ

It is not unreasonable to obtain a second opinion when surgery is being recommended if you are not comfortable with or not sure about the advice being given. However, I would not be able to make any recommendations regarding a particular physician for your brother-in-law to see outside of noting that there are several highly qualified otolaryngologists in the Des Moines area and of course one of the top ENT academic departments in the country is at the Univ. of Iowa College of Medicine.
