6 weeks ago I noticed a lump under my left ear the size of a marble. I've read that this is common, but if the lymph node is swollen in reaction to an infection, the lump should be soft. The lump in my neck is rock hard. I feel fine and haven't been sick for quite some time...but I'm concerned. What could this be?

In an adult, this type of finding - a non-tender neck mass in an otherwise asymptomatic individual that has been present for more than a month - warrants and evaluation by an otolaryngologist for thorough evaluation and biopsy.
