I have a very dear friend who has been experiencing pain in the right side of her tongue for the past six months. This is accompanied by some whitish lesions in the floor of her mouth, an occasional electric-shock like pain in the area. She has seen numerous physicians during this time including: dentist, oral surgeon, allergist and her regular family MD who have been uable to help her. She has taken Diflucan and Nystatin for thrush without any change or relief, also antibiotics without change. She has not been able to eat solid food because of the pain and has lost at least 25 lbs. No cultures or biopsy of the area has been done and no radiologic tests except a dental X-ray have been done. B12 levels were normal and she is not anemic and otherwise feels OK. My question is what kind of specialist should she see ( ENT, oral surgeon, neurologist) and what tests would be appropriate to get to the bottom of her problem? Thank you

I would strongly recommend an evaluation by an otolaryngologist for consideration of a biopsy.
