My daughter, who is six years old, has periodic nose bleeds. Since she has been two years old she has had nose bleeds. Initially, they were minor and a few far between. Now her nose is bleeding more often. Last night she came to our room around 2:00 a.m. covered with blood. Here bed sheet was covered quited heavily with blood. We had her pinch her nose for five minutes and that stopped the bleeding.
What may be the cause of this bleeding?
Thank You,

The most common cause of such bleeding is dry nasal membranes and trauma cause by rubbing or "picking" the nose. Inflammatory nasal conditions such as allergy, colds, sinusitis, etc. may also increase the susceptibility to nosebleeding due to engorgment of blood vessels in the nose due to the inflammation. Rarely is nosebleeding in children such as you have described caused by serious bleeding disorders. However, it would be quite reasonable to consult with an otolaryngologist regarding your child's problem. You can find additional information regarding the management of recurrent nosebleeding in the "review" section of the ENT clinic.
