My tongue is red and sore, feels slightly burning and white raised bumps at the back.

There are many potential causes of soreness of the tongue including dental disease, dental preparations (toothpaste, mouthwash, etc.), yeast infection (thrush), side effects of medications, certain rheumatologic or inflammatory conditions, anemia, vitamin or mineral deficiencies, neoplasms, etc. The white bumps you noticed on the back of the tongue may be normal structures known as the circumvallate papillae.
