A few weeks ago I had a sinus infection and possibly a cold too (the doctor wasn't sure if it was one or the other) but he prescribed some antibiotics for me to take for 10 days. Since then I have had problems with my ears - a noise in my left ear and when I arise from sleeping my head feels like it is about to explode the noise is so loud. After I have been up for a while the noise subsides enough that I can get myself together to go to work. What I would like to know is, can this problem be helped with medicine or treatment? I've never had anything like this before. Also, in July (last two weeks) my husband and I are going on vacation to Florida. Could flying on a plane cause me more problems?

Most likely you are experiencing a sequela of a prior upper respiratory infection related to eustachian tube dysfunction. Eustachian tube dysfunction not uncommonly occurs during and persists for a variable time following upper respiratory conditions such as the common cold, pharyngitis, or sinus infections. Eustachian tube dysfunction can cause ear pressure, discomfort or pain as well as an alteration in hearing acuity. Anti-inflammatory medications and limited use of topical nasal vasoconstrictor sprays such as Afrin for 2-3 days combined with frequent attempts to gently "pop" the ears can be helpful. Persistent or severe symptoms warrant an evaluation by your primary care physician. Airplane travel can worsen or exacerbate eustachian tube dysfunction - it is best to be free of such symptoms before air travel if possible.
