Vasomotor rhinitis is a term that is typically used in reference to a condition of the nose associated with chronic profuse watery nasal discharge often accompanied by nasal airway obstruction that is not related to allergy. Symptoms may be exacerbated by envirnomental factors such as irritants, fumes, cigarette smoke, pollution, or weather changes. Some medications such as certain antihypertensive medications can cause such symptoms. Additionally, certain hormonal conditions such as pregnancy can cause such symptoms.

There are a variety of treatment options available. Anti-histamine therapy can be helpful in some but have the potential disadvantages of overdrying of the membranes and sedation with some of the older generation anti-histamines. Decongestants can be helpful such as pseudoephedrine or phenolpropanolamine. These can have the adverse side effect of over-stimulation or palpitations. Topical nasal steroids have commonly been used for this condition and typically offer the most help for the nasal airway obstruction and are less helpful for the watery nasal discharge. A newer nasal preparation known as nasal Atrovent can be quite helpful for the watery nasal discharge. Ultimately, in severe or refractory cases, laser surgery of the turbinates might be recommended.
