Uveitis

----------------------------------------------------------------------

UVEITIS is an inflammatory disease of several structures within the eye, collectively called the UVEA. There are four structures included: 1) the IRIS, the colored part of the eye, 2) the CILIARY BODY, the focusing muscle of the eye, 3) the VITREOUS gel, the gel which fills the center of the eye, and 4)the CHOROID, the middle vascular layer of the eye.

There are hundreds of causes of uveitis. Many diseases that affect other parts of the body can cause uveitis. Examples include rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, inflammatory bowel disease and some forms of cancer. Infections such as TB and syphilis cause uveitis. Injuries to the eye can cause inflammation to develop as well. Then, there is a whole category of uveitis called "idiopathic" -- this basically means that the cause is unknown.

Uveitis is treated with medicines that reduce inflammation. These medicines can be in the form of eyedrops, pills or injections. If the uveitis is related to another illness, sometimes treating that illness will cause the uveitis to clear up, too. If left untreated, uveitis can cause cataracts, glaucoma and permanent damage to the eye.

Symptoms of uveitis include: red eyes, dull aching pain and sensitivity to light.

Anyone with symptoms of uveitis should be examined promptly by an ophthalmologist, a medical doctor who specializes in diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases.
