The Eye Clinic Frequently Asked Questions

My father has macular degeneration. He has had this condition for five years. Recently, I read , that there have been studies completed, that showed a relationship between certain vitamins and minerals and an improvement in people with macular degeneration. Do you know specifically what these vitamin and minerals are?

Answered by Richard E. Gans, M. D.

There is early evidence that there may be a nutritional component to the disease, macular degeneration. As you may know, macular degeneration is an age-related condition which causes loss of central, detailed vision. Up until now, treatment has been confined to laser procedures to attempt to arrest the process, once it has developed. Although laser treatment can be helpful to some people with macular degeneration, it cannot help the majority of individuals with this condition.

Recent studies have looked at ways to prevent the disease, or slow its progression. Although the evidence is far from conclusive, there is some reason to believe that certain nutritional supplements may slow the progression of macular degeneration. These elements are zinc and selenium. In addition, various anti-oxidants, such as vitamins C and E may be of benefit by preventing free radical formation. Since judicious use of these supplements is unlikely to cause harm, and because they may help to slow the progression of a disease which is difficult to treat, even in the best of conditions, some ophthalmologists suggest dietary supplements in an attempt to prevent worsening of macular degeneration.
