The LENS, or CRYSTALLINE LENS, is the second (and weaker) of the two focusing structures inside the eye. When we are young, the lens can change shape when the muscles of the ciliary body pull on it. This allows us to focus on objects at differing distances. Over time, the lens becomes harder and this focusing ability is lost.
The normal lens is clear. If the lens becomes cloudy or hazy, it is called a CATARACT. Cataracts are common in older individuals. If a cataract causes a loss of vision, an operation can be done to remove the hazy cataract and restore vision. In most cases, a plastic lens is put inside the eye during the operation to take the place of the natural lens.
