Myopic Degeneration refers to the degenerative process that occurs in the retina and choroid in situations of severe and progressive nearsightedness. In such a situation, the posterior portion of the eye enlarges, causing the retina and choroid to stretch. As they stretch, they become thin and atrophic. As the atrophy progesses, vision deteriorates. A variety of specific disorders can occur related to the stretching of the structures in the eye.
In general, myopic degeneration is treated with progressively stronger glasses or contact lenses. If the process is severe or develops secondary complications, laser treatment or surgery can be considered. These operations can sometimes prevent the vision from deteriorating further, but they do not improve upon vision that has already been lost.
