How does conjunctivitis differ from blepharitis? I have been diagnosed by an opthamologist as having blepharitis, when the GP said it was conjunctivitis.
Regardless, nothing seems to clear it up completely, even systemic antibiotics, I can just maintain a certain level of comfort with soaks and drops.
Any suggestions?
Thanks-

Blepharitis and conjunctivitis are two separate problems. Conjunctivitis is described in the previous question/answer in this area.
Blepharitis is a condition characterized by chronic, low-grade inflammation of the margins of the eyelids. Typically, people notice crusting on their eyelashes. Their eyelids may stick together upon awakening in the mornings. Their eyelids may be red and sore. Over time, they may start to lose their eyelashes. Blepharitis can be an isolated problem or it can be part of a more extensive skin condition like rosacea. Once again, it is a chronic problem, as opposed to a self-limited condition such as conjunctivitis.
Treatment of blepharitis starts with methods of eyelid hygiene. Daily cleaning of the eyelids by gentle scrubbing with a dilute solution of baby shampoo or an over-the-counter eyelid cleansing agent is often all that is necessary to control the problem. (Note: "control", not "cure" -- when the cleansing stops, the problem will return). For occasional "flare-ups" of the problem, an ophthalmologist may prescribe an antibiotic eyedrop or ointment. For severe conditions, particularly those related to acne rosacea, an antibiotic in pill-form can be used. This is not any antibiotic, but a particular one, which is used in a low dose, for an extended period of time -- sometimes six months to a year.
Keep in mind that "a certain level of comfort" is a goal in treating this condition. Do not expect that it will be cured.
