Answered by Richard E. Gans, M. D. (xx102@ofcn.org)

Albinism is an inherited condition, present at birth. It is passed on from parent to child through the genetic material, DNA. Some types of albinism are called "recessive". This means that only one in four offspring (statistically) will show the disease. Some types are called "X-linked recessive" which means that females can be carriers of the genetic trait, but only males are effected with the disease.
