Please provide information on Macular Cysts. I have a rather large one and I'm told that if it opens I will be blind in that eye. At this point, it has had no impact to the vision in that eye.

A cyst is a fluid-filled sac. The macula is the center of the retina. Thus, a macular cyst is a cyst that develops in the center of the retina. Macular cysts can result from generalized swelling in the retinal center or from traction, or pulling, of the vitreous on the center of the retina. A macular cyst will have a detremental effect on vision. This effect, however, is reversible if the cyst resolves. If the cyst ruptures, it leaves a permanent hole in the center of the retina, resulting in a permanent loss of central vision. Thus, it is important to treat the underlying cause of a macular cyst, before it has a chance to rupture.
Generalized swelling of the macula is a condition called cystoid macular edema(CME). It has many causes; some of which include inflammation, diabetic retinopathy, and surgery. To prevent CME from resulting in a macular hole, the underlying cause must be remedied. Inflammation is treated with medication. Diabetic retinopathy is treated with laser. If CME results after surgery, it will often resolve spontaneously. If not, medications are often helpful.
If vitreous traction (pulling on the macula by the vitreous gel) causes a macular cyst, surgery is sometimes necessary to relieve the traction. A procedure called a vitrectomy can be done to remove and replace the gel within the eye with a clear fluid. The pulling will be relieved and the cyst can resolve.
