I was interested in your recent reply to the person asking about depth perception because my opthamalogist told me that I too lack DP. I wonder if it is because I was cross-eyed in one eye as a child and was operated on when I was about 4 to cosmetically correct the problem.
As a result of all this, I would like to know if you think that my past history is the reason why I can't see a darn thing when I look at those 3-D pictures! It would seem that depth percep- tion would be vital since we are told to look "through" the picture to see the 3-D image. Everyone also tells me to try and make my eyes cross and again it seems ironic since I was born that way and had to get it corrected! I know that the 3-D industry people say that ANYONE can see their works of art, but I wonder if that is really true. What do you think? Thanks-

Yes, it is because of your being cross-eyed as a child that you cannot see the 3D images. The concept at issue here is called "stereopsis", that is, stereoscopic vision. In order to have stereopsis, both eyes must work synchronously from birth. If the eyes are not perfectly aligned, the images seen by each eye are focused on differing areas of the retina. Even if the eyes are realigned surgically, stereopsis rarely develops in those who were born with crossed eyes.

It is not true that "anyone" can see the 3D effects of this art form. If it is any comfort to you, many of us with normal amounts of stereopsis still have trouble seeing some of these images.
