My wife had a molteno implant in her right eye about 7 years ago. At that time the only place that performed the surgery was the Estelle Doheny Eye Clinic in LA. Do you know of any recent studies showing long term effects of this operation? Is it more common now, or is LA still the only place to have it performed? Thanks.

A Molteno implant is a small plastic tube that is inserted inside the eye to treat severe cases of glaucoma. The tube allows fluid to drain out of the eye in a controlled fashion; thereby lowering the pressure inside the eye.
Although Molteno implants (and other similar devices) are much more commonly used now, they are still reserved for the most refractory of glaucoma cases. They are used, only when conventional methods of controlling pressures have failed. These devices can be implanted anywhere within the country by ophthalmologists familiar with their use.
I am not aware of specific statistics with regard to their long- term effects. If I can find these details, I will post them to this newsgroup.
