Each individual case of macular degeneration is different. Each requires its own specific therapy, "tailor-made" to the specific clinical findings. Laser will sometimes help to slow or prevent progression of the disease, but it is not without its own risks. Not all cases of macular degeneration are amenable to laser treatment.
It is always reasonable to seek a second opinion if you are not satified with the course of action your doctor is taking. There are many qualified ophthalmologists throughout the country who deal with macular degeneration on a daily basis and could provide you with more information. Bascomb Palmer is certainly a reputable place.
